“our teeth and ambitions are bared” is a zeugma
and it’s a zeugma where one of the words is literal and one is metaphorical which is the BEST KIND
I didn’t know about zeugmas until just now! That is so awesome, everybody:
zeug·ma ˈzo͞oɡmə/noun
- a figure of speech in which a word applies to two others in different senses (e.g.,John and his license expired last week ) or to two others of which it semantically suits only one (e.g., with weeping eyes and hearts ).
ISN’T THAT AWESOME??
#in english class in high school my teacher had us write our own zeugmas in class#and one guy came up with ‘he fell from her favor… and the window’#i am forever looking for opportunities to use that one
She dropped her dress and inhibitions at the door.
What’s this? My favorite rhetorical device showing up on my dashboard?
IT HAS A NAMEEEE!! OH MY GOD!!!
I LOVE THIIIIIS!!!
One I’ve loved was “on their weekend trip they caught three fish and a cold”
I love these they’re like a pun and a metaphor wrapped up into one neat phrase

when i say i like hiking, i don’t mean “eight mile backpacking trip with special gear and an emergency beacon” sort of hiking, i mean a three mile loop to go look at pretty things and then a huge brunch after.
this is in no way a slam on hardcore hiking, it’s very fun, but i mostly just need to lower people’s expectations when i say hiking is a hobby of mine
“No no, that’s ranger hiking. I like hobbit hiking.”

Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole - Review
In a genre saturated with romantasy that lacks nuance and relatability, Penn shines and ups the bar for everyone else in this genre. As much as this book is about an angry woman living her life in the middle of mortals and descended (long lived descendants of gods and mortals), it’s not hard to draw the modern day real-world divide she’s actually writing about. In this way, it’s very reminiscent of Carissa Broadbent’s writing - the well-written narrative, badass morally grey characters, and nuance of a complex there’s-no-right-answer world. There might be villainous characters, but there’s no true villain, and this is a concept that our FMC struggles with throughout the novel.
The way Penn writes her characters, you can *feel* all if the emotions they are feeling, and you’ll go through a rollercoaster of them. I found myself cheering Diem on, and then screaming at her the next second “why would you do that!!!” and wanting to smack her upside the head. She’s brave, smart, and angry. And her anger is so relatable and well written.
Spark of the Everflame is not romance heavy YET, but it’s a wonderful start to one. I fell in love with the MMC and cannot wait to see more of him (and the dragon!) in the later books. I loved how Diem’s arc did not revolve around him, and how she is her own individual with a lot of other, bigger problems at the moment. This is a slooooow burn with angst and not-so-fated mates and I am loving every second of it. There’s mystery that is well built (THAT ENDING 😱) and I also enjoyed the family representation. Diem has a relatively normal family on one side - her dad and her brother. There’s a specific scene where Diem and her father are teasing her younger brother and it was just so normal and fun and real, in a genre where almost everyone is an orphan. But her mom is a different story, and the mystery, tension, intrigue, and fantasy of it all gives readers the best of both worlds.
Easily a 5 star for me, and mind boggingly good for a debut novel. And the 2nd book is one of the best books I have ever read in my life
watching a tiktok and someone just described the black/blue gold/yellow dress meme as “one of the first things to ever go viral”
ok the irony and misinformation in the tags is making me insane. leprosy? caused by bacteria! and not actually that contagious! tuberculosis? bacterial! bubonic plague? also bacterial!! if you want an early viral infection smallpox is right there! polio! hell, even influenza! bacteria ≠ viruses!

nothing like stepping outside while the seasons are changing and suddenly feeling a change in the weather that knocks you back in time by several years
sorry professor I’m going to have to miss class today bc when I walked outside in the morning it was cold and sunny in a very specific way and suddenly I was struck with a nostalgia for years past so vivid and potent that I had to sit down
